Gear

Gear ratio, torque Gears are toothed wheels which interlock to form simple machines. This notes explains a few important principles about gears, speed and torque. Gears are the most commonly used method of torque multiplication. Think of the gear system as a divider on speed and a multiplier on torque. We gear up when we increase velocity and reduce torque. We gear down when we increase torque and reduce velocity. Gears convert torque to velocity, and vice-versa.

Gear ratio, speed, revolutions Gears are toothed wheels which interlock to form simple machines. Think of the gear system as a divider on speed and a multiplier on torque. This note links the end gear ratio of a car with speed, engine revolutions, and wheel size.

Electricity

Ohm's law Georg Ohm discovered that all electrical quantities are proportional to each other and have a mathematical relationship. Therefore, this note explains and illustrates Ohm’s law relating current, voltage, and resistance together in series and parallel circuits. It also describes the concepts of work and power in this context.

Engine

Valve timing This note explains the valve timing (for inlet and exhaust valves) of the four-stroke engine (intake, compression, power or combustion, and exhaust). The four strokes – a cycle – and its valve timing are graphically represented in a spiral of two circles showing the two crankshaft revolutions of a cycle.

Horsepower This note describes the concept of horsepower and links together mechanical horsepower, torque, and engine revolutions per minute. Using mechanical horsepower, it explains and illustrates with some classic motor cars why at 5252 rpm, torque and power are equal.

Power conversion This note presents the conversion of mechanical horsepower hp and metric power ps in kW . It also explain how to convert a specific measure into another one. Even if all measures are all very similar, differences may matter, especially for high power cars.
