About
Styled by Pininfarina, the Peugeot 404 was initially offered as a saloon, station wagon, and pickup. A handsome, upmarket convertible was introduced in 1962, followed by a coupé in 1963.
The 404 was powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline engine, available with either a single Solex downdraft carburetor or Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. The engine was inclined at 45 degrees, allowing for a lower hood line and improved aerodynamics.
A 1.9-liter Indenor diesel engine was also offered as an option. In June 1965, a modified 404 coupé set several world records at Montlhéry, highlighting the exceptional reliability and performance of Peugeot’s diesel technology.
This example is a 1967 model equipped with fuel injection and a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission. While the dashboard features the updated three-round-dial layout, the 1967 models retained the earlier gearbox configuration, with first gear positioned in a dog-leg pattern.
