There is one thing to understand about this car: it is enormous. Maneuverability is not its strong suit, but in a straight line it is surprisingly quick. Beneath the vast expanse of the hood lies a Corvette-derived LT1 V8, capable of propelling this 4500-pound behemoth to 60 mph far faster than its size would suggest. Large anti-lock brakes bring the car back down to speed with equal confidence.

Inside, the Fleetwood offers generous accommodation for six adults in exceptional comfort, while the trunk rivals the cargo capacity of many minivans. Dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control were all standard equipment, underscoring Cadillac's commitment to safety and refinement.

Compared with the 1993 and 1994 models, the 1996 Fleetwood received a revised center armrest offering ample storage and dual cupholders. A charming carryover feature is the audible chime that reminds drivers to cancel the turn signal if it has been left blinking for more than half a mile, an unmistakably American touch.

The Fleetwood represents the end of an era for Cadillac. At the conclusion of the 1996 model year, production ceased as General Motors repurposed its Arlington, Texas assembly plant for more profitable truck production.

I purchased this Fleetwood in Walnut Creek, California, in 2001 while studying at UC Berkeley. I quickly fell in love with it, as its slightly detuned LT1 Corvette engine makes the car far more agile and responsive than its imposing appearance would suggest.
